New Delhi: If you are a teenager or older than that, there is a very large possibility that you worry about the rate at which your hair is falling. Irrespective of gender and age, all of us are seen worrying about the hair on our heads, and are seen desperately trying out different shampoos, oils, and serums which claim to cure hair fall, but do really nothing.
However, have you ever considered the possibility, that you may be obsessing and stressing over nothing? Turns out, a certain amount of hair fall is normal, and there may actually be nothing wrong with you. Here is what you need to know about normal hair fall.
How much hair fall is normal?
According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, it is normal to lose hair strands between the count of 50 to 100. People who have long hair may notice more hair falling from their head, as compared to people with shorter hair. If you still think 50 to 100 strands of hair in a day is too much, consider the number of hair follicles on your hair. An average person has about 1,00,000 hair follicles, or even more on their scalp.
While male-pattern baldness is a common condition among men, women who actually lose more hair. According to a report, heat styling, hair colouring, and chemical hair treatments can contribute to hair fall. 40 per cent women lose more hair, due to these factors. Other factors like pregnancy and menopause can increase hair fall among females.
How to tell if you have more than normal hair fall?
A simple test at home can tell you if you are losing more hair than the normal rate. The “Pull Test” requires you to pick a small patch on your scalp, and run your fingers through the hair, gently tugging at your hair. If more than 2-3 strands are seen on your hands post it, you may be experiencing more than normal hair fall, that may be a sign of an underlying illness or condition.
Some of the common causes of excessive hair fall include –
- Thyroid conditions
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Pattern baldness
What are some ways you can reduce hair fall?
Even when losing 50 to 100 strands in a day is normal, there are certain things you can do to reduce hair fall and strengthen your hair.
- Your hair fall when they are weakly attached to the scale, which happens due to dry scalp. Apply oil to your scalp regularly, and gently massage it into the scalp to improve blood flow. This will help to strengthen your hair roots.
- Keep your hair clean, but do not wash them too often. Use a mild shampoo, with the least amount of chemicals to wash your hair. Use natural conditioners like henna, eggs, yoghurt, and cream to soften your hair.
- Avoid chemical treatments, hair colouring and regular hairstyling with heat. Heat damages the hair makes them dry and susceptible to breakage and loss.
- Eat a healthy, nutritious diet. Nutrients received from the food you eat can help in improving your hair’s health, and reduce hair fall and breakage.
