Common habits that are bad for your eyes

It has been clinically proven that the overuse of digital devices has a tremendous impact on your eyesight, with a tendency of developing short-sightedness or near-sightedness (myopia). Poor eyesight can endanger a person’s life – perhaps, the risk of driving with visual disparity may be a cause of concern. Use the 20-20-20 rule to help to prevent this problem – it is recommended that you should take a 20-second break from looking at a screen every 20 minutes.
- Smoking: Smoking isn’t just bad for your overall health, it is also bad for your eyes. Research has shown that smoking increases the risk of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye syndrome, and age-related macular degeneration. Take steps to quit smoking immediately, and if you need help quitting, talk to your doctor.
- Not wearing protective eyewear: Protective or anti-glare eyewear can help protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, which can otherwise damage the sensitive cells of the eyes. It will also shield your eyes from blurred visions and bright sunlight, to name a few. Make sure to wear UV-blocking sunglasses every time you head outside.
- Misusing makeup: You need to be careful when wearing eye makeup. Ensure that you don’t apply mascara or eyeliner too close to your lash line as it could block oil glands and contribute to a build-up of bacteria. Also, make sure that you replace your eye makeup every three months. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that you should throw away your eye makeup after three months.
