Stylish sleepwear is clearly having its day in the spotlight as B-Town celebs sport them while going about their daily routine. From Alia Bhatt, who was seen in a starry white tracksuit (a mix between a pyjama and sportswear that you can lounge in), Shraddha Kapoor’s shiny mint-green striped pyjama set to Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ oversized satin pyjama shirt and straight leg satin trouser, sleepwear is clearly winning on the street for its comfy look.

TAKING INSPIRATION FROM KIDDIE-STYLE PJS

There was a time when sleepwear was labelled the out-of-bed look, and considered to be shabby and the lazy man/woman’s way of dressing. Since then, things have changed drastically with celebs sporting sleepwear in style. Recently, Alia Bhatt went all white in a well-coordinated white tracksuit with a starry print, while Kriti Kharbanda chose a baby pink tracksuit for her airport look. Kiara Advani, on the other hand, gave you a sense of déjà vu with her baby pink and blue avatar. All of these clearly, drawing inspiration from kid’s pyjamas, a trend that is catching on here.

Designer Pria Kataaria Puri, goes on to share, “This is a mix between sleepwear and sportswear with a pyjama feel. It’s something you can lounge around in. Currently, funky, interesting and unusual, fun prints or stripes and geometric lines are in vogue. Even the colours are vibrant like the neon colour palette in sunshine yellow, neon green, bright purple, fuchsia and soft pastel colours like baby pink, sky blue, off-white and black. This trend can be worn in check prints in classic colours or it could have dots and cupcakes in pastel colours. It can also be sported in neon colours with modern or abstract designs, including planets and spaceships, etc. The idea is this particular kind of sleepwear/loungewear is styled like kid’s pyjamas, which have cupcakes, sweets and fairies on them. It can be worn together as one ensemble or as separates.” According to her both Alia and Kriti sport this style well.

SPORTING THE ‘PJ LOOK’ AT WORK
And while the sleepwear look is one of the go-to picks for celebs travelling, it’s also being seen as alternate day-wear because of the comfort factor. It’s a style that can work in a creative space or in the start-up sector according to designer Nachiket Barve. He adds, “The sleepwear trend works when it looks intentional rather than just lazy. Your accessories and hair and make-up needs to look polished, yet there is a conscious casualness to the look. It’s a trend that works in the creative or start-up sector. The idea is to make it look ironic where the styling is pyjama-like, yet the fabrics are high quality and polished. If you are attempting this look, make sure the outfit looks really fresh and is not creased, crumpled or pilling.”

HOW TO ADD SOME OOMPH TO YOUR SLEEPWEAR
Minimalistic accessories can add extra oomph to your overall look. Designer Swapna Anumolu feels the great thing about sleepwear is that it can make you feel relaxed and looks effortlessly stylish. She adds, “To take your look from the drabby bedroom PJs to an extremely chic office-look, one can easily leave them untucked or to add a bit of sophistication, you can tuck the top of your pajamas into loose-fitted pants or pencil skirts. Add a pair of snazzy stilettos to your attire and you are ready for a night out.”

PULLING OFF THE PYJAMA SUIT LOOK
Designer Arpita Mehta goes on to add, “One needs to strike the perfect amalgamation of style and comfort to pull off this look at work. Modale satin and linen are two great fabrics that one can opt for. They are comfortable, look amazingly elegant and at the same time are easily manageable in this season. While opting for the ‘PJ look’ for work is a bold step in itself, avoid going in for complicated prints. Choose minimal and simple colours or prints that look elegant and are easy on the eye.”
