New Delhi: You have had a long day at work, and it is anyway too hot outside so you have been sweating all day. The second you reach home, all you want to do is get into the shower. Even in the summers, some people enjoy a hot shower because it feels way more relaxing than a cold one. A hot bath or a hot shower is nothing short of therapy. However, even when everyone is aware of its relaxing benefits, people advice against the use of hot water on the skin or the hair.
Most medical professionals, dermatologists, etc. recommend the use of lukewarm water to wash your body and your hair. They strictly advise against the use of very hot or warm water to be used on the skin and hair, and they definitely have reasons for the same.
Causes dry hair and scalp
Hot water can strip your hair and scalp of moisture and cause dry hair. It will not only make them look dry and frizzy, but it will also lead to making your hair more brittle and prone to breaking.
Can cause breakage
Hot water can cause your hair to become brittle, and your hair roots to become weaker because of the dryness. This can lead to hair fall and breakage, causing a reduction in volume.
Causes burns and redness
Hot water can burn your skin or your scalp, cause redness or irritation. Using extremely hot water can be harmful to the skin as well as the scalp and hair.
So should you use cold water to wash your hair?
The answer would be no. While using hot water is not recommended because of the reasons stated above, using cold water can have its own set of cons for washing your hair. Cold water does not help to open the pores, and therefore makes it difficult to clean them well. Another con of using cold water is that it increases the retention of water in your hair, which not only causes your hair to look very flat, without volume but is also a cause of hair fall.
What is the ideal temperature of water to use to wash your hair?
It is recommended that one should mix the two temperatures of water to reach the ideal temperature, fit to wash your hair with. Warm water can help open and clean the pores, which is a pro of using warm water. One should use lukewarm water to shampoo and rinse their hair, and then apply conditioner. Conditioner should be washed off with cold water, leaving the hair moist. Cold water also helps to seal the pores and keeps dirt from entering into them.
