New Delhi: The summer season is at its peak right now, especially in North India, with temperatures reaching as high as 46 degrees in the capital, and 50 degrees in parts of states like Rajasthan. A heatwave alert was issued to many parts of the country, following which temperatures have not dropped much. While everyone waits for the monsoon to finally strike, the summer season has brought with it its own share of trouble in the form of diseases and infections. People are experiencing heatstrokes, prickly heat, rashes and sunburns. One uncommon condition called the summer flu is also making its way this summer season.
Though the season for flu is mostly during fall and winter, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has found the prevalence of the virus all year round. However, while flu is uncommon during the summer season, you may experience flu-like symptoms in the season. This could be because of problems like a common cold, pneumonia, food poisoning, etc. which are common in the summer season. If you experience flu-like symptoms in the summer season, you can try these home remedies and natural treatments.
Apple cider vinegar
Apart from treating skin problems like acne and aiding weight loss, apple cider vinegar is a magical potion that can also be used to relieve symptoms of summer cold or flu. Mix one spoon of apple cider vinegar with water, and add honey to the mixture. Drink this mixture once or twice a day, till the symptoms subside. Apple cider vinegar turns the body alkaline and helps to kill the bacteria and viruses causing the infection.
Citrus fruits like lemon and oranges contain vitamin C, which can work as a great remedy against summer cold. Vitamin C improves the response of the body’s immune system against germs like viruses and helps to fight the infection better.
Known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and antiseptic properties, turmeric is a great herb to add to your list of home remedies for almost all health problems. Mix turmeric with milk and drink a cup of it before you sleep or add a teaspoon of the powder to hot water and gargle with it.
Steaming with essential oils
Essential oils have been proven to be great healers. If you are suffering from summer flu, mix a few drops of essential oils into a bowl of boiling water. Place your face above the bowl and cover your head with a towel. Breathe normally to take in the steam, which will help soothe pain and a stuffy nose.
Honey has healing properties and works great for symptoms of a cold. If you are experiencing a sore throat or stuffy nose due to summer flu, mix honey with black pepper, or ginger, and consume one teaspoon once or twice a day till the symptoms subside.
