Who says, what goes away, can’t come back again? Fashion-wise at least, that was the case this year as retro styles dominated the style charts. Everything from exaggerated sleeves to the pantsuit, baggy jeans and bell-bottoms as well pleats, were seen on so many celebrities. It was also a year to play bold with the bralette and micro bags coming into the limelight. Here’s looking back at the styles that dominated the year, some of which are sure to head into 2020…
A case for neon green
This year it was time for neon to get back into the limelight. Seen in various hues like acid green, neon went so popular that it went on to be the colour of the season. Hot on the ramp, it made its way to neon gowns and shoes, and who can forget Deepika Padukone’s neon green voluminous tulle gown at the Cannes festival this year! Selena Gomez also scorched things up with an acid green, highlighter-style dress that she wore to a music awards in November. Alia Bhatt made heads turn in her neon green monokini as and Ananya Panday rocked her ruched bodycon dress in acid green.
The bralette bought innerwear into outerwear
Forget those good ol’ T-shirts. Take a cue from the stars who revamped their casual look with a bralette. The fad takes innerwear into outwear stylishly and the garment is meant to be worn under jackets and dresses, in see-through tops, with racerback tanks and over a high-waist skater skirt. Styled with fringes, stacked metal chains and even a blazer and ankle boots, the bralette is empowering and shouts out body positivity. Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Hailey Bieber, and Charlize Theron have sported the style trend of late. Kourtney Kardashian looked hot in a shimmer black and silver pinstripe pantsuit with a tiny bralette, Kristen Stewart went for a gray square bralette under her gray pantsuit on a TV show and closer to home, Ananya Panday opted for an all-denim look with a bralette and denim tights.
Pantsuit became the new power dressing
The two-piece classic pantsuit can rev up style like none other. Also called the ‘power suit’, its no longer just someting to be worn to a work meeting. Take a cue from the A-list who took to the pantsuit in various styles on both formal and casual occasions. Karisma Kapoor went glam in her black pantsuit with gold bird motifs that she paired with black heels and hoops, Parineeti Chopra slayed it in a navy-blue pantsuit with a belt, Janhvi Kapoor went for a millennial-pink pant-suit that had a plunging neckline while Katrina Kaif went for a heavily embellished studded pantsuit with a bralette. The two-piece looks here to stay, Power vixens, are you ready to include it in your wardrobe in the new year?
Bigger the better, say puff sleeves
If there is one look that went bold this year, it was the puff sleeve. The exaggerated silhouette in silk-ruffle and tulle went sky-high on the style charts and was seen on a bunch of celebs. Once a retro fave, puffed sleeves were welcomed this year and hailed for being a sense of “fun” and “a symbol of strength”. There is much that one can do with the look — wear puffed sleeved tops over culottes, wide-legged pair jeans, a skirt or even gown. This April, Rihanna created a buzz in her neon yellow mini dress with massive, poufy sleeves, back home Sonam Kapoor Ahuja tried the trend in a printed sari ensemble, Sonakshi Sinha made for an elegant look in her red and white polka dot dress with exaggerated sleeves and Anushka Sharma wowed the online space in her silver-white dress with puff sleeves for the party thrown for Katy Perry.
The sari gets a belted revamp
Slim belts are used to just tighten pants and skirts and cinch the waist area, but this time in Bollywood stars also wore a quirky belt over a saree. Katrina Kaif opted for an emblem belt over a floral pink saree, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja slayed slaying in an olive floral saree. She completed her traditional look with statement earrings and a neckpiece with perfect kohl eye makeup. Karisma Kapoor mixed ethnic and western as she combined her sari with a brown jacket and matching belt. And Shilpa Shetty also sported the Indo-western look in her vibrant yellow bandhni saree with a puff-sleeved blouse and matching embellished belt.
Forget the skinny jeans and jeggings. B-town’s stylistas chose all things vintage as retro jeans made a huge comeback this year. Celebs sported everything from high-waisted denims, to wide-leg bell-bottoms and even distressed and acid-washed denims. Disha Patani made a case for the cool style in her flared jeans that she teamed with a white crop T-shirt.
Pleats stole the show
If 2019 were to be dominated by a single trend, it would certainly be the year of the pleat. A nod to all things retro, the pleat — in accordion, knife, box godet or inverted styles – were another fave. Olivia Wilde made a case for it in her ivory dress with pleats at the Oscar Awards in February. Recently human rights lawyer Amal Clooney was spotted out in Venice in a glamorous micro-pleated minidress. From skirts to dresses, Bollywood stars also rocked the style. Karisma Kapoor chose a striped sweater with her metallic pleated skirt, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja rewrote airport fashion in her pleated midi skirt the with an oversize blazer.
Micro bags made a big impact
Whoever thought the tiny could be so cool! Model Lizzo turned the micro bag into the ‘IT’ accessory when she wore it to the American Music Awards this year. Most major brands went on to include this bag in their lineup and the stars gave it their nod, too. Singer Rihanna matched the tiny accessory with her tunic dress and Beyonce opted for a forest green micro bag fanny-pack style, with her striped outfit. Priyanka Chopra Jonas is a huge fan of micro bags and has been seen it on quite a few occasions. The teeny bags can be carried anywhere and literally fit into the palm of the hand. Not too high on the utilitarian scale, they’re still certainly hot! Care to carry one into 2020?
