Should or should you not drink coffee and tea during a fast


Coffee and tea are the two most loved and consumed hot beverages in the world. People start their mornings with the smell of these steaming hot drinks and sometimes continue to sip these all through the day to destress and fuel themselves. These two quintessential beverages are an unbreakable part of life and are freely consumed during fasts. But is it the right thing to do? A lot of different concepts and beliefs are followed during fasting. Some believe that drinking coffee or tea is allowed whereas a lot disagree. In today’s article, let’s find out the right answer for this most asked question.

Although the answer isn’t that simple, fasting has its own rules and rituals, that purely depends on people who follow them. Like for example, during Navratri fasts, a lot of people do drink tea and coffee but avoid any packaged beverage from the market. Whereas some people only rely on water to quench their thirst during those nine days. It mainly depends on the mindset of people and what their ancestors have been following since ages.

As per the beliefs in India, majorly the important festivals such as Sawan, Navratri where fasting plays a significant role is associated with climatic changes. These festivals fall during the shift of seasons which makes the human body vulnerable to diseases, and to safeguard our system from different bacterial and viral infections, the fasting diets were designed by our ancestors. High salty, sugary, oily and packaged foods aren’t allowed along with smoking, drinking and non-veg foods. The healthy foods that help in boosting metabolism and also curbing the appetite are consumed during a fast.

Traditionally people used to follow a simple diet filled with simple vegetables and fruits along with goodness of various home-made beverages. Water plays a key role while fasting, it is always advised to drink plenty of water, flavoured water, coconut water, fresh juices to maintain proper blood pressure and electrolyte balance in the body.

Although, scientifically, there are again different concepts and reasons behind the consumption of coffee and tea during fasting. Coffee and tea both have caffeine which can do good for the system if consumed in the right amount. But the overdose can ruin your lifestyle. Caffeine causes insomnia, anxiety and depression. Whereas sugar increases the blood glucose level, promotes weight gain and also is bad for the heart.

During fasting our body goes on a detoxification mode, therefore, it is advised to avoid processed, sugary drinks during that time. If you have abstained yourself from any kind of solid foods during fasting then coffee and tea can cause discomfort to your health. Drinking coffee or tea on an empty stomach might cause acidity and gastric. But if you haven’t completely restricted yourself from food items then you can enjoy one or two cups of your favourite beverage without milk and sugar in a day.

The caffeine in these hot drinks will provide you energy and boost your metabolism. Also, both black-tea and black-coffee are linked with curbing the appetite and also weight loss. Therefore, if you are someone who wants to keep intermittent fasting for its health benefits then avoid sugary drinks and limit the consumption of coffee and tea to a maximum of three cups.

Lastly, it can be concluded that it is a personal choice to drink tea or coffee during the fasting season. And if going by the concept of consuming healthy food, high-caffeinated beverages that are packed with sugar shouldn’t be a part of fasting. However, black-coffee and black-tea with little sugar in a controlled amount can be an ideal option, if you are aiming at a healthy yet effective fasting procedure.
