Should you really begin your day with a cup of tea?

New Delhi: It is a nice, warm morning with the sun shining bright, and you wake up to finally begin your day with a hot cup of bed tea. Tea is one of the most popular beverages had around the world, and especially in India. For Indians, Tea is a part of every activity – from a gathering with friends to spending some alone time reading a book, or when you have a sore throat or are sick. However, for people who begin their day with a cup of tea, there are things they should know.

For starters, people should not confuse drinking tea in the morning with drinking tea as the first thing in the morning. While drinking tea with breakfast or after breakfast may be healthy, drinking tea as the first thing in the morning may cause health issues.

People who drink tea as the first thing in the morning must keep in mind that their stomachs are on an acidic pH scale when they wake up. Tea is acidic, and when they drink tea on an empty stomach, it can cause acidity or heartburn. For the same reason, medical professionals advise against drinking tea before bed as well. This can lead to disturbance in metabolic activities of your body as well.

Bed tea may actually not be a good idea, also because of another property of tea – it is a diuretic. Tea can cause dehydration, especially when consumed after an 8-9 hour of sleep when the body is already deprived of water and food. Dehydration can cause muscle cramps and also interfere with regular body functions.

In India, people mostly consume tea with milk, which can cause bloating and constipation. When the gut is empty, lactose content in the milk can affect the gut, and cause gas and constipation.

So do you have to give up your morning cup of tea?

No. You do not have to completely give up your morning cup of tea, but you do have to make some changes in the way you have it, and when you have it.

1. You must not drink tea on an empty stomach. Eat fruits, cereal or some sort of solid food before you consume a cup of tea.

2. Starting your day with a cup of warm water is believed to be ideal to manage the pH levels of the stomach.

3. Drinking black tea, or green tea instead of tea with milk is considered a healthier choice for a morning tea.
