To fight the scorching heat of summer, we turn to our delicious thirst quenchers. One of the most popular summer coolers is lemon juice or lemonade. Native to Asia, lemons are a hybrid between a sour orange and a citron. Along with quenching our thirst, it soothes a sour throat, aids in digestion and has several health benefits. Adding salt, sugar, cumin along with lemon in water makes for a good summer coolant and it is generally considered good for health. As much as we love having lemon juice squeezed in water, it is often believed that drinking too much lemon juice could be bad for our health because of the acid present in lemon.

The internet is divided on its benefits which make is essential to know if the acid in lemon can have adverse effects on our bones. As for the uncertainty about the effect of citric acid on our body, nutritionists have said that lemon water is healthy. According to researchers, there is no such report that says lemon water is not good for bones. Lemons are strongly antibacterial and antiviral, high in antioxidants and vitamin C which makes it very effective for good health. Drinking lemon water is also associated with weight loss detoxifying our body. Lemon contains citric acid which, when fully digested and metabolized, has an alkalizing effect on our body. Even if lemon juice boosts bone strength and overall health, it is important to consume it wisely.

Lemon water is most effective if consumed first thing in the morning. It is recommended to add lemon juice to warm water because it helps extract vitamin C and polyphenols from the lemon and its peel. Also, how much lemon water you drink daily is important. According to Bengaluru-based nutritionist Dr Anju Sood and consultant nutritionist Dr Rupali Datta, having the juice of 2 lemons per day is enough to keep you hydrated in the summers, and it is perfectly healthy to drink lemon water every day. Honey and lemon water or a delicious lemonade can be a good booster for our liver and kidney. Also, lemon water is good for the replenishment of ascorbic acid or vitamin C in our body which is important for healthy hair and heart.

Lemon juice is believed to help with constipation as well as it prevents the formation of stones in kidneys. So, it can be agreed upon that we can drink lemon water every day and drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning as it contains potassium which is an essential nutrient required during the summer season. Also, lemon juice squeezed over salads can be good for the absorption of iron in our body.
