New Delhi: Exercise plays a very important role in determining your overall health and well-being. It helps you maintain a healthy weight and keep the risk of diseases away. Studies have linked regular exercise with a healthy heart and reduced risk of diabetes as well.
However, a recent study has shown that one protein can replace exercise and have the same effects on the body. The protein called Sestrin is a naturally occurring protein and can produce the positive effects of exercise, even in its absence. The research was conducted by scholars from Michigan Medicine and can help people live a healthy life, especially those in their old age.
Researchers had previously noted that the protein accumulates in the muscles after an exercise. As researchers tried to explore the link further, they developed a fly treadmill. Using the treadmill, they trained the flies for three weeks and compared their running and flying ability to normal flies that lacked the ability to make Sestrin. Flies can usually run for four to six hours, and the normal flies’ ability improved over that period, however, the flies without Sestrin did not improve with exercise.
When extra sestrin was induced in the muscles of normal flies, maxing out their sestrin levels, it was found that those flies had abilities above and beyond the trained flies, even without the exercise.
Sestrin has other positive impacts on the body as well. Improve aerobic capacity, improved respiration, and fat burning are typically associated with exercise. The researchers suggested that Sestrin can coordinate these biological activities by turning on or off the different metabolic pathways.
