New Delhi: Your eyes are one of the most important parts of your health. In fact, they are your body’s most highly developed sensory organs. Your eyesight is precious and protecting your vision will reduce the odds of blindness and help you lead a more fulfilling life. You know that eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly can help maintain eye health. Yet, there are lots of seemingly harmless habits that could negatively affect your vision. Here are five everyday habits you need to stop doing right away to keep your peepers as healthy as possible.

Common habits that are bad for your eyes

  1. Rubbing your eyes: Itchy eyes can be bothersome and tempting to try to rub it out. However, rubbing would only worsen the problem worse and increase the risk of infection. If something gets into your eyes, flush them gently with water or relieve them with a cold compress instead.
  2. Constant use of electronic gadgets: Long hours at work and prolonged use of electronic gadgets can take a huge toll on your visual capabilities. It has been clinically proven that the overuse of digital devices has a tremendous impact on your eyesight, with a tendency of developing short-sightedness or near-sightedness (myopia). Poor eyesight can endanger a person’s life – perhaps, the risk of driving with visual disparity may be a cause of concern. Use the 20-20-20 rule to help to prevent this problem – it is recommended that you should take a 20-second break from looking at a screen every 20 minutes.
  3. Smoking: Smoking isn’t just bad for your overall health, it is also bad for your eyes. Research has shown that smoking increases the risk of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye syndrome, and age-related macular degeneration. Take steps to quit smoking immediately, and if you need help quitting, talk to your doctor.
  4. Not wearing protective eyewear: Protective or anti-glare eyewear can help protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, which can otherwise damage the sensitive cells of the eyes. It will also shield your eyes from blurred visions and bright sunlight, to name a few. Make sure to wear UV-blocking sunglasses every time you head outside.
  5. Misusing makeup: You need to be careful when wearing eye makeup. Ensure that you don’t apply mascara or eyeliner too close to your lash line as it could block oil glands and contribute to a build-up of bacteria. Also, make sure that you replace your eye makeup every three months. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that you should throw away your eye makeup after three months.

Keeping your eyes healthy is just as important as keeping your heart or body healthy. Making simple changes to your lifestyle such as eating a nutritious diet and staying physically active, can go a long way in improving and protecting your vision. Additionally, you must know your family’s medical history and get your eyes checked on a regular basis.
