The Met Gala may be popularly known as ‘fashion prom’ or in other circles, the ‘Oscars of fashion’, but attendees of the ball have long shown that hairstyles, makeup and manicures are just as important as their clothes when styling a look with a specific aesthetic. “ the love of the exaggerated, the ‘off,’ of things-being-what-they-are-not,” says Susan Sontag in her essay “Notes On Camp”, which inspired this year’s Met Gala theme. Defined by excess and exaggeration, camp calls for leaning into opulence in an over-the-top way—making it ripe for some serious beauty creativity. Think: more is more is more (more tones, more colour, more textures and more sparkle).
Lady Gaga, Gigi Hadid and Sophie Turner amplified their eye makeup game
Attendees stayed true to the over-the-top theme by choosing molten metal shades to accent their eyes. Kim Kardashian West’s wet look eyeshadow was complemented by her slicked-back sculptural hair; Awkwafina wore crystal encrusted swaths of golden eyeshadow across the orbital bone; and Celine Dion’s fringed metallic headpiece was paired with a shimmery yellow gold smoky eye that came traced with dark, black liner. And it wasn’t just the women—Billy Porter, who was carried onto the red carpet on a palanquin, wore an ornate headdress and matching sequinned makeup around his eyes.
Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Ashley Graham chose exaggerated hairstyles
While barrette stacking is the trend du jour, Ashley Graham decorated her sleek ponytail with several baubles along the entire length, and Lupita Nyong’o wore actual combs in her tresses. Deepika Padukone actually took her hair to new heights with teased, retro-styled strands accessorised with a bejewelled headband, and Kacey Musgraves and Mindy Kaling both wore platinum blonde Barbie-styled wigs with lots of volume. Speaking of va-va-voom volume, Priyanka Chopra wore her usually wavy lob in permed spirals atop her head, complementing the hairstyle with fuchsia lips and eyeshadow, as well as white lashes and eyebrows. Among looks you can actually try at home, Hailey Bieber wore a high ponytail with a ’70s bow attached, and Miley Cyrus stepped out in a bob and mini bangs. Jewel-toned hair (Kylie Jenner, Lucy Boynton) and fringed, gilded headpieces (Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B) were seen on the red carpet as well.
